- Little Ewe Ballad [Balada Mioriţa]
Discovered by Alecu Russo and adapted by Vasile Alecsandri/Descoperită de Alecu Russo şi prelucrată de Vasile Alecsandri
On a ridge so nice,
Nest of Paradise,
- The longing sprouted in my soul [Mi-a răsărit în suflet dorul...]
The longing sprouted in my soul,
A flower blue in a bright place,
And one sweet evening, right at dusk
We saw our love was full of grace, –
- The lake [Lacul]
Heavy piles of clouds advance,
Following an unseen way,
And because of their slow dance
The lake's face is color gray.
- On the way back [La întoarcere]
The wind flows towards the plains
And the ground will sweep.
Come to life all plants and grains,
Fields are all asleep.
- On the train [În tren]
It's racket, the train is ready to go
All sorts of weird strangers now get in the car.
It's seven and ten, my worries do grow,
I turn to the window, I'm feeling bizarre.
- At peace [Împăcare]
A comrade when the pain is rife
That's how I saw you, on the whole;
I gave you my entire life,
A starry sky, devoid of strife –
- Enigma of the closed books [Enigma cărţilor închise]
Immaculate fair pages written by hands on which the humble time has placed
Its everlasting emblems with much haste!
O, thoughts withered in closed books
O, cold deeps opened in paradises with good looks
- Storm [Furtuna]
No one lingers in the street.
The black clouds come like a fleet.
Fly the dry leaves in the air
And are scattered everywhere,
- Heroic distich [Distih eroic]
Young poplar, inlaid in the midst of summer,
With lively boughs and shining green leaves, too,
When wind passes in flight
Teach me to laugh in sunlight as you do
- From the threshold [Din prag]
Like evening star
I fade away
And night around
Will soon expand.
